Description of Scheduled Activites
1) Hook Activity: To attract and increase student interest in the lesson, the teacher will place any of the cartoons from this website on the projector. I recommend using this one or this one. Students will be instructed to identify figures in the cartoon and what they believe the cartoon represents.
2) Video Clips: Visit the following url: http://www.learner.org/resources/series197.html#
Locate Unit 20: Imperial Designs and launch the video player. Teacher should show from the opening to the 3:38 mark and then again from the 18:42 mark to the 21:57 mark.
3)Class Discussion and Word Web: After watching the video clips, the teacher should lead a whole-class discussion based on the question "What is imperialism?" Students should provide words or phrases related to the idea of imperialism and the teacher will record these on the overhead/blackboard. Connections should be drawn between synonyms and related ideas.
4)Individual/Partner Lesson: Teacher will choose whether students should complete this activity individually or with a partner. The teacher will pass out the following documents: Opium Wars Background, Commissioner Lin Letter to Queen Victoria, London Gazette, First Opium Wars Document Evaluation, Goals and Conflicts Worksheet.
Students will first read the background information. Then students, alone or with a partner, will read and examine Commissioner Lin Letter to Queen Victoria document and London Gazette article. They will evaluate these documents using the structured questions on the First Opium Wars Document Evaluation sheet. Once students have evaluated both documents, they will fill in the Goals and Conflicts worksheet by drawing on the background and primary source materials.
If time permits, the teacher should lead a class discussion of what conflicts in goals the students have identified between China and Great Britain.
5)Homework Assignment: Teacher will provide students with a copy of the Treaty of Nanjing. Students should identify major terms of the treaty, ie what rights/concessions did the British get from China, as well as indicate how these terms did or did not meet British and Chinese goals relating to the First Opium War.
