1)Hook Activity: To reinforce yesterday's lesson, have students respond to the following prompt at the start of class. "Imagine you are a Chinese citizen - who is NOT involved in the opium trade. How does the Treaty of Nanjing make you feel? Why?
2)Treaty of Nanjing: The previous night's assignment was for students to review the Treaty of Nanjing and identify the concessions Britain received from China. The teacher should ask the students to volunteer to write the various concessions on the board. After each concession is noted, either that student or another classmate should explain why/how the concession conflicts with Chinese goals.
3)Taiping Rebellion: The teacher should hand out the guided worksheet and introduce the Taiping Rebellion as follows: Less than ten years after the Chinese defeat in the First Opium War, a new threat to Qing power arose. This time, however, the threat came from within. Answer the worksheet questions as you listen to and watch the following video. The teacher will queue up The Taiping Rebellion video. Once the video is over, the class should briefly run through the answers. Then, for the next 3-5 minutes, the teacher should ask the class to name all the threats to the Qing dynasty that were in the video.
4) Augustus Lindley: Augustus Lindley was an Englishman who became an ally of and participant in the Taiping Rebellion. Students should read the background information and then the excerpted preface from Lindley's book about the Taiping Rebellion. Students will answer the questions located at the end of the excerpt to help them understand the reading. When the students are finished, the teacher should lead a discussion in the remaining time about the way Lindley and others like him complicate the picture of imperialism.
5) Homework Assignment: The teacher will advise students to think about the origins of and goals of the Taiping Rebellion as well as the ways in which non-Chinese were involved from both sides.
